I think the thing I miss the most about a non-dairy lifestyle is pizza. I loved pizza growing up. Once a week my parents would order a pizza and we sit round the television and watch a movie together while we ate. It is some of the fondest memories I have from my childhood. But, now pizza is a problem. I can’t really order a pizza. I usually just make my own. But sometimes I tend to be lazy and don’t want to cook. A long time ago I found a Kashi pizza that was completely dairy free; but after a couple of months it went off the market. One day while shopping in the natural food section at my local grocer I came across the Amy’s brand. Amy’s has several different pizzas that are made from mostly organic products and a wide range of gluten-free options. There are a few lactose free options, but there is only one dairy free option.
Amy’s Fire Roasted Vegetable pizza is the only pizza in the Amy’s line that is dairy free. The soy cheese pizza has casein in it and is off the menu for me. The Fire Roasted Veggie pizza is also soy free, tree nut free and vegan. It also has the added benefit of being cholesterol free. The sauce is made out of organic shiitake mushrooms and is topped with roasted artichokes, organic onions, and organic red peppers. To make it even better it’s 100% natural, not artificial flavors and no hidden ingredients. It’s quite delicious.
I’d like to say that I am not a big fan of mushrooms. It’s mostly a texture thing for me. I don’t like the texture of a mushroom across my tongue. I honestly don’t mind the mushroom sauce on this pizza. Maybe it’s just shiitake mushrooms or maybe it is just that they are pureed and lose the texture I don’t care for. The shiitake sauce is very creamy and brings a rich flavor to the pizza. The onions, red peppers and the artichokes blends nicely with the mushrooms. You can also taste the roasted garlic and the balsamic vinegar. The pizza itself has subtle sweet taste underneath the salt of the mushroom sauce.
Overall the pizza is full of flavor and has a nice texture. If portioned properly you can get about three servings out of the pizza; granted on a bad day I can eat the whole pizza in one sitting. It’s not bad in terms of pricing. It’s about the same price of any frozen pizza.
If you’re looking for a great tasting dairy free pizza Amy’s Fire Roasted Vegetable Pizza is a good choice. Give it a try and let me know what you think.
